An empty, styrofoam coffee cup fell from Lydia’s hands into the small garbage basket beside her dark, oak desk. Her office was spotless and clean, which was occasionally normal for Lydia seeing as how she couldn’t focus if her space was a mess and nothing was in it’s place--but a huge case had just been closed. In these instances, when she had been working nonstop for days and nights on end, it normally looked like a disaster. It was spotless, though, like she had been compulsively cleaning to keep herself busy, or to keep her mind off something. She had spent more time in her office than usual, mainly because her apartment was pretty empty and quiet. At the office, at least she had the company of her officers that we were working late shifts.
At this point, though, it was a little past noon and the sun was shining inside the building’s windows, the place was bustling with noise and people. She brushed her fingers through her hair, pulling the red strands over her shoulder. She snatched her blazer off the chair in the corner of her office and slipped it over her shoulder before she pushed the glass door open, the flood of noises surrounding her.
Her eyes flickered around the desks in front of her, to the officers bustling around and filling out paperwork. With a pleased, small smile she turned and purposefully made her way towards the break room to grab another cup of coffee. It was awful and tasted bitter, but her previous coffee supplier was currently not supplying her with good tasting coffee so she had to take what she was given.
The break room was fairly empty, which is why it surprised her when she turned around with another styrofoam cup full of coffee, struggling to get the plastic lid on, only to come face to face with her previous boyfriend--Peter. She paused where she was pushing the lid down, bright pink lips parting and green eyes widening in surprise. She hadn’t seen him in a while, not since she called for a needed break and breathing space. Her first conclusion was that he was here to see her, but why?
There was a long stretch of silence, where Lydia wondered if she should just walk past him and pretend like she didn’t see him in this wide, empty room or say something to him. She pressed her lips together and tilted her chin up, an eyebrow twitching upwards, “This isn’t the hospital, is it?” She said, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
